Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has strongly condemned comments by Seyi Makinde, accusing the Oyo State Governor of inciting violence and undermining national security with references to the country’s turbulent political past.

The party, in a sharply worded statement, described Makinde’s remarks at an opposition summit in Ibadan as “reckless” and “dangerous,” warning that such rhetoric could trigger instability and threaten Nigeria’s democratic order.

According to a press statement issued by the All Progressives Congress and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the governor’s invocation of the historic “Operation Wetie” crisis was inappropriate for a sitting chief security officer of a state.

“Makinde’s incitement is reckless and a clear threat to peace and national security,” the statement read.

The APC further argued that the governor’s comments go beyond political criticism, warning they could fuel “anarchy, murderous rage and widespread lawlessness.”

“No individual, however highly placed, should have the power to threaten or endanger the lives and safety of Nigerians,” the party stated.

The ruling party also called on security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously and act decisively to safeguard lives and property.

In the statement, the APC dismissed opposition claims that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state, attributing challenges within opposition parties to internal crises and leadership failures.

It specifically referenced key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, alleging that internal disputes and political ambitions have weakened their respective parties.

“The opposition’s challenges are self-inflicted, arising from poor leadership, internal contradictions, and disregard for due process,” the APC said.

Reaffirming its stance, the party maintained that Nigeria’s democratic space remains vibrant, noting the presence of multiple political parties actively participating in the electoral process.

The APC also reiterated its commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthening democratic institutions and delivering on its governance agenda.

“Our democracy is founded on competing visions. Nigerians will reject fearmongering and empty narratives,” the statement concluded.
