Tinubu Appoints Abuh Mohammed as NPC Boss, Signals Fresh Drive for Credible Population Data

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed renowned scholar and public policy expert, Dr. Abuh Mohammed, as the new Director-General of the National Population Commission (NPC), entrusting him with the responsibility of leading Nigeria’s foremost demographic agency at a critical period for national planning and development.
The appointment, which takes immediate effect, forms part of a broader reshuffle involving 26 new appointments across 10 federal agencies and commissions approved by President Tinubu to strengthen governance and improve service delivery across key institutions.
Dr. Mohammed, an indigene of Egume in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, is expected to spearhead reforms aimed at improving population data management, demographic research and evidence-based policy formulation.
The National Population Commission occupies a strategic position in Nigeria’s development architecture, serving as the statutory agency responsible for population censuses, birth and death registration, demographic surveys and the production of reliable population statistics that guide government policies, infrastructure planning, resource allocation and social intervention programmes.
His appointment has been widely welcomed in Kogi State, particularly in Dekina Local Government Area, where political leaders, community stakeholders and residents described it as a recognition of merit, professionalism and years of distinguished public service.
Supporters expressed confidence that Dr. Mohammed’s academic background and administrative experience would strengthen the Commission’s capacity to deliver credible demographic data required for effective governance and sustainable national development.
