Peter Obi Convoy Attack: Kogi NDC Candidate Demands Probe, Condemns Intimidation

The Kogi East Senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Ameh, has condemned the reported attack and obstruction of the convoy of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State, describing the incident as unacceptable and a threat to democratic rights.
A statement issued by Ameh following the reported incident said the alleged roadblock and intimidation of Obi’s convoy must be investigated, particularly amid claims that individuals involved may have been acting with the backing of persons in positions of authority.
Ameh said no Nigerian should be subjected to harassment, threats or unnecessary obstruction on public roads because of political affiliation, stressing that public infrastructure belongs to all citizens.
“The attack on Mr. Peter Obi’s convoy, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in Benue State today stands condemned. It is ridiculous and unacceptable that such action has been taken against the opposition,” he said.
He further alleged that the reported action violated constitutionally guaranteed rights to freedom of movement and association, citing Sections 41(1) and 40 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
According to him, the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to move freely throughout Nigeria and the right to assemble and associate with others, including through political parties and other lawful associations.
“If these actions were indeed sponsored or encouraged by anyone connected to the state government, then that is deeply troubling and must be thoroughly investigated,” Ameh said.
He stressed that holding public office was a responsibility and not a licence to intimidate citizens or empower individuals to disrupt lawful political activities.
Ameh consequently called on the Benue State Government to openly condemn the incident and ensure that Obi’s visit to the state proceeds without further interference.
He also urged relevant security and law enforcement authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable, irrespective of political affiliation.
“We must continue to speak up for peace, accountability, and the rule of law. Benue deserves leadership that protects its people and respects our constitutional rights, not actions that harass, intimidate, or humiliate our citizens,” he said.
The NDC senatorial candidate reiterated his call for authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the allegation of possible political connections, while urging all stakeholders to uphold peace and respect democratic freedoms.
