The Headquarters Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) has dismissed what it describes as “false, misleading and highly exaggerated” reports surrounding a recent foiled terrorist attack on troops in Benisheikh, insisting that the military remains firmly in control and operationally superior in the North-East theatre.

In a press statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, the military clarified that contrary to widespread claims, only four personnel—two officers and two soldiers—were killed during the encounter, not the 17 casualties being circulated across some media platforms.

“The official and verified report… clearly stated that 2 officers and 2 soldiers paid the supreme price in the course of the engagement. Any contrary figure being circulated is entirely false, misleading, and devoid of credibility,” the statement said.

The military also debunked claims suggesting that the Brigade Commander’s vehicle was unserviceable during the attack, explaining that the commander was operating from a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle which became temporarily immobilised amid intense combat operations.

“The Commander was mounted on a high-grade Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, which was temporarily immobilised in the heat of combat while he was actively coordinating the counter-assault,” OPHK stated, adding that this demonstrated leadership presence at a critical point rather than any equipment failure.

OPHK further warned against the circulation of misleading visuals, noting that images and videos being shared in connection with the incident were unrelated and deliberately misrepresented to fuel false narratives and public anxiety.

“The public is urged to disregard such content, which is clearly intended to misinform and create unnecessary panic,” the statement added.

Reaffirming its stance on professionalism, the Nigerian military condemned attempts to exploit the incident for propaganda or political purposes, stressing that such actions undermine the sacrifices of troops on the frontlines.

“Such actions not only mislead the public but also diminish the sacrifices, courage, and professionalism of officers and men who continue to risk their lives daily in the defence of the nation,” it said.

According to OPHK, troops successfully repelled the attack, retained control of their position, and forced the insurgents into a disorganised retreat—an outcome it says reflects increasing combat effectiveness and sustained pressure on terrorist groups in the region.

“The failed assault underscores the sustained pressure on terrorist elements and the growing combat effectiveness of troops across the Theatre,” the statement noted.

The military reiterated that it remains the only credible source of verified operational information and urged the public to rely on official channels while refraining from spreading unverified reports.
