Army Embraces AI, Strategic Communication as Key Weapons in Modern Warfare
By Pan Afric Reporters
The Nigerian Army has emphasized the growing importance of strategic communication and artificial intelligence (AI) in contemporary military operations, declaring that success in modern warfare is increasingly determined not only on the battlefield but also in the information space.
The position was reiterated at the close of the Directorate of Army Public Relations (DAPR) Combined First and Second Quarters 2026 Media Workshop in Abuja, where military authorities underscored the role of media integration in shaping public perception, countering misinformation, and enhancing operational effectiveness.
The remarks were contained in a closing address delivered by the Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede.
Speaking at the workshop, Colonel Anele described the theme, “Media Integration as a Force Multiplier in Contemporary Warfare,” as timely and strategically relevant to the evolving security landscape confronting Nigeria and the global community.
She noted that discussions during the workshop highlighted how effective media operations can strengthen coordination among security agencies, improve public confidence, and contribute significantly to mission success.
“Our engagements over the past few days have clearly demonstrated that when effectively integrated, media operations significantly enhance operational coordination, strengthen inter-agency collaboration, and contribute to mission success,” she said.
AI Emerging as Strategic Tool
A major highlight of the workshop, according to Anele, was the extensive focus on Artificial Intelligence and its expanding role in media and information management.
She explained that AI-powered tools are increasingly being deployed for audience analysis, information monitoring, rapid-response communication, and strategic influence operations, making them indispensable in contemporary security operations.
“In an era where speed, accuracy, and influence shape outcomes, Artificial Intelligence is no longer a luxury but a strategic necessity,” she stated.
“Its significance lies in its ability to support high-end media operations, strategic influence campaigns, and joint operations. These sessions have reinforced our understanding that information remains a decisive operational enabler.”
Media Critical to National Security
The Army spokesperson stressed that modern conflicts are no longer fought solely with weapons and military hardware, noting that narratives, public trust, and information superiority have become critical determinants of operational success.
According to her, strategic communication now plays a role comparable to traditional military assets such as firepower and maneuver warfare.
“Just as firepower and manoeuvre planning are critical to battlefield success, strategic communication and media engagement are equally vital in the cognitive and perceptual domains,” Anele said.
“The ability to project truth, maintain credibility, and positively influence public perception remains central to achieving lasting operational success.”
She added that coordinated media engagement helps shape narratives, counter adversarial propaganda, strengthen public confidence, and reinforce the legitimacy of military operations.
Call for Stronger Collaboration
Reaffirming the Nigerian Army’s commitment to defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Anele emphasized that contemporary security challenges require closer cooperation among the Armed Forces, other security agencies, and the media.
“Success in modern military operations requires synergy among the Armed Forces, security agencies, and the media. The media plays an indispensable role in shaping national security outcomes,” she said.
The Acting Director urged participants, including military officers, communication professionals, and journalists, to apply the knowledge gained during the workshop in promoting professionalism, accuracy, and responsible information dissemination.
“Together, we can deny adversaries the advantage of misinformation while amplifying the truth about our collective efforts,” she stated.
Appreciation to Stakeholders
On behalf of the Chief of Army Staff and the Nigerian Army, Anele expressed appreciation to facilitators, media partners, participants, and stakeholders whose contributions ensured the success of the workshop.
She described their commitment as a reflection of collective patriotism and a shared determination to build a safer and more secure Nigeria.
“As we draw the curtain on this workshop, I charge you all to remain ambassadors of truth, champions of ethical standards, and committed partners in advancing national security through effective media integration,” she said.
The workshop brought together military public relations officers, media practitioners, communication experts, and security stakeholders to explore emerging trends in strategic communication, information management, and media engagement within the context of contemporary security operations.
