IGP Disu Deepens Alliance with Traditional Rulers, Assures State Policing Reforms
By Pan Afric Reporters| Dutse, Jigawa State.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu has called for stronger collaboration between traditional institutions, security agencies and local communities to tackle insecurity and promote national development, while reassuring police personnel that ongoing discussions on state policing reforms will not jeopardize their careers, welfare or benefits.
The IGP gave the assurance during a working visit to Jigawa State on Monday, where he met with Governor Umar Namadi, participated in the 8th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council (NTRC) in Dutse, and addressed officers and men of the Jigawa State Police Command.
The details were contained in a press statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force and signed by DCP Anthony Okon Placid, Force Public Relations Officer, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on June 15, 2026.
Addressing members of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council, the IGP commended the council under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for its contributions to peacebuilding, dialogue and national unity.
He emphasized that traditional rulers remain critical stakeholders in intelligence gathering, conflict resolution and community engagement, stressing that effective collaboration between security agencies and traditional institutions is essential to addressing security challenges across Northern Nigeria.
“Sustained collaboration between traditional institutions and security agencies remains vital to addressing insecurity and promoting development across Northern Nigeria,” the IGP stated.
During his courtesy visit to Governor Umar Namadi, Disu reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening partnerships with the Jigawa State Government and other stakeholders to improve public safety and deepen community policing initiatives across the state.
Speaking to officers and men of the Jigawa State Police Command, the police chief expressed appreciation for their dedication and professionalism in maintaining law and order.
He assured personnel that the Force leadership remains committed to improving operational capacity, personnel welfare, career development and service delivery nationwide.
Addressing concerns surrounding the proposed establishment of state police, Disu sought to allay fears among officers, stressing that the proposed reform is aimed at strengthening the country’s policing architecture rather than weakening the Nigeria Police Force.
“There is no cause for anxiety. The reform is intended to strengthen Nigeria’s policing architecture while preserving a strong national policing institution capable of addressing interstate and national security threats,” he said.
The IGP further assured officers that their welfare packages, career progression, pensions and other legitimate entitlements would remain protected under any future policing arrangement.
He also urged personnel to remain committed to professionalism, discipline and ethical conduct, warning that the Force would continue to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against corruption, extortion, abuse of office and other forms of misconduct.
“Officers must deepen community engagement, embrace intelligence-led policing, and uphold the highest standards of integrity and respect for human rights,” Disu charged.
The Inspector-General reiterated that building public trust remains central to modern policing and called on officers to strengthen their relationships with the communities they serve.
The Nigeria Police Force, he noted, remains committed to enhancing operational effectiveness and working closely with governments, traditional institutions, communities and other stakeholders to promote peace, security and sustainable national development.
