Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Onyekachi Nwebonyi has disbursed one hundred million naira(N100,000,000) to nine hundred and thirty(930) undergraduates and postgraduates students studying in various universities in Nigeria.

During the event held on Tuesday at Remeritona Hotel in Abakaliki, Nwebonyi urged beneficiaries of this year’s scholarship scheme of his foundation to shun cultism and study hard to be useful to themselves and the society.

Nwebonyi said he offered the scholarships to save the indigent students from dropping out of school.

He further said that the gesture was to complement the effort of Governor Francis Nwifuru in the education sector who he said has offered foreign and local scholarships to over 1,000 graduates for their Masters and PhDs.

“I expect them to be serious with their studies because like I said, in our own time I didn’t have this type of opportunity. I didn’t benefit from anybody in form scholarship.

“But now, things has changed. People like us are out to support them to make sure that those indigent students didn’t drop out of school.

“This is why we are increasing it from 500 to 830 students. And why I was here, I got another list which is over 100 .

“So, I expect the students in as much as I can carve out this money on my own with the support of my well-wishers and supporters to utilize this opportunity and make sure they don’t join cultism.

“They should read from the classroom to their reading desks and that is what I did and I am a lawyer and that gave me the edge to be in the Senate.

” So, we expect that by tomorrow, we are going to have better leaders than us because we have given them a golden opportunity to excel”, he said.

He implored the beneficiaries not to join social media to castigate leaders, but to continue to support them to encourage them to do better.

Nwebonyi, who represents Ebonyi North senatorial zone, said has set standards in different sectors through quality representation.

Wife of the state Governor, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru represented by the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Felicia Nwamkpuma said through the scholarships, Nwebonyi has invested in education and future of the beneficiaries.

She further said that the initiative demonstrates full commitment to human capital development and complement efforts of the state government in promoting quality education and youth empowerment.

She congratulated the beneficiaries and urged them to make the lawmaker, the state and the nation proud by being dedicated to their studies, upholding excellence and shunning all negative behaviors.

“Let this scholarship invite you to become responsible citizens who will contribute meaningfully to the development of our state and nation “, she told the beneficiaries.
