IGP Charges Newly Promoted AIGs, CPs to Lead with Integrity, Humanity, Professionalism

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu has charged newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and accountability, stressing that their promotion marks the beginning of greater responsibility rather than a reward for past achievements.

Speaking at the decoration ceremony of thirteen (13) newly promoted senior police officers to AIG and seventeen (17) to CP,  IGP Disu congratulated the officers on attaining another significant milestone in their careers, describing the promotions as well-deserved recognition of their dedication, resilience and years of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force.

According to him, the officers had earned the confidence of the Force through professionalism and unwavering commitment to duty.

He acknowledged the enormous sacrifices made by police personnel in the course of service, including prolonged separation from their families, difficult working conditions and the burden of meeting public expectations.

“I know what it costs to serve under those conditions because many of you have carried those burdens personally. Missed birthdays, months away from home, nights in the field while your families longed for your presence. Those sacrifices have not gone unnoticed,” he said.

The IGP reminded the newly promoted officers that their new ranks placed them in positions where junior officers would look up to them for leadership and guidance.

“This rank is not a reward for the past. It is the Force’s vote of confidence in what comes next. Your character will become the example, and your discipline will become the standard,” he stated.

He urged them to lead with uncompromising integrity, warning against corruption, abuse of office and other forms of misconduct.

“I expect you to lead with uncompromising integrity, with no tolerance for misconduct, abuse of office or corruption. But I also expect you to lead with humanity. The officers under your command are watching to see whether you truly care for them as people, not just personnel,” he added.

The police boss further emphasized the need to build a modern, intelligence-led and technology-driven police force while maintaining strong relationships with communities.

“We must continue building a modern, intelligent and technology-driven police force, but we must never lose sight of the reason why—safer streets, protected families and communities that trust us.”

He stressed that public confidence remained critical to effective policing.

“Public confidence is not a public relations exercise. It is the difference between receiving information that saves lives and the silence that follows when trust is lost,” he said.

The IGP assured officers of the continued commitment of the Police leadership to their welfare, capacity building and professional development, while urging the newly promoted officers to mentor younger personnel and uphold the values of the Force.

Addressing the families of the officers, he acknowledged their unwavering support and sacrifices, noting that the promotions were equally a recognition of their endurance.

“To the families gathered here today, this rank belongs to you as much as it does the officers. Every posting you endured alone, every worry you carried in silence and every sacrifice you made without recognition made this achievement possible,” he said.

The IGP also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support to the Nigeria Police Force and commended the Police Service Commission for ensuring that the promotion process remained transparent, fair and credible.

He concluded by urging the newly decorated AIGs and CPs to wear their new ranks with humility and pride, reminding them that younger officers now look to them as role models.

“Lead in a way that inspires hope. Together, we will continue to build a Nigeria Police Force that is professional, disciplined, accountable and unwavering in its service to the people of Nigeria,” he said.
