Governor Alia Rallies Benue with Message of Unity, Progress on Democracy Day
Pan Afric Reporters|MAKURDI, JUNE 12, 2025 — The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, delivered a stirring Democracy Day address at IBB Square, Makurdi, urging unity, sacrifice, and collective action to deepen democratic values and accelerate development across the state.
In a speech marked by reflection and resolve, Governor Alia described June 12 as “more than a date on the calendar,” calling it “a mirror of our collective spirit—the spirit of freedom, sacrifice and the enduring will of the people.”
Paying homage to Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the historic 1993 presidential election, and other democracy icons such as Kudirat Abiola and Gani Fawehinmi, the governor noted that their sacrifices laid the groundwork for Nigeria’s democratic journey. He also honoured the contributions of notable Benue figures like Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu and Senator Iyorchia Ayu, as well as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who he described as a “key architect of the pro-democracy struggle.”
Governor Alia praised past and current administrations for recognizing June 12 as a national symbol of democratic ideals. He emphasized that democracy thrives only when the voices of the people are heard, respected, and protected.
Reflecting on his administration’s achievements, Governor Alia declared, “Our shared goal is simple: to make democracy work for the ordinary Nigerian.” He highlighted progress made under his leadership, including:
- Restoration of relative peace in conflict-prone areas;
- Regular payment of salaries and pensions previously owed;
- Support for agriculture and rural empowerment;
- Rehabilitation of infrastructure, including roads, schools, and hospitals;
- Support for displaced persons;
- Youth-focused job creation and skills development programmes.
“These are not promises; we are delivering on them, one step at a time,” he stated confidently.
Looking ahead, the Governor announced plans to launch agro-industrial hubs, expand road networks, support women-led and small businesses, and implement universal health insurance for Benue residents. He also pledged continued transparency, technological adoption in governance, and prudent management of public funds.
In a passionate appeal to citizens, Alia said, “Let us reject division, hate, and violence. Let us embrace dialogue, compassion, and hard work. Democracy is a team effort.”
The Governor concluded his address with a solemn tribute to the victims of political repression and communal crises in Benue, reaffirming his commitment to lead with integrity and humility.
“Democracy is not a destination, it is a journey,” he said. “A journey we must all walk with faith, with resolve and with the hope that tomorrow will be better than today.”
As the celebration ended with songs and cheers across the square, the spirit of June 12 remained alive—reminding the people of Benue that their voices matter, their dreams are valid, and their future is worth fighting for.
