The Anambra State Police Command has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran journalist, Mr. Alphonsus Nweze, a dedicated reporter with Apex News, who tragically lost his life in a road accident along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
In a condolence statement issued on Thursday, October 9, 2025, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, minps, PhD, on behalf of the officers and men of the Command, commiserated with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Anambra State Correspondents’ Chapel over what he described as “the tragic and untimely demise” of Mr. Nweze.
According to the statement, “Mr. Nweze, a respected and committed member of the Correspondents’ Chapel, sadly lost his life in a fatal road accident in the afternoon of Tuesday 7th October 2025 along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway. His passing is deeply painful, leaving behind his family, friends, and colleagues who cherished his passion for truth, integrity, and service to society through journalism.”
The Police Command paid glowing tribute to the late journalist, acknowledging him as “a diligent and courageous reporter whose work contributed immensely to shaping the information landscape of the security report in the State.”
The statement further read, “His dedication to fair and responsible reporting earned him the respect of the Police and the public alike.”
CP Orutugu extended heartfelt prayers for the repose of Mr. Nweze’s soul and divine comfort for his bereaved family, colleagues, and the wider media community. “The Commissioner of Police prays for the peaceful repose of his soul and for God’s comfort upon his family, colleagues, and the media community in this moment of grief,” the Command stated.
Concluding the condolence message, the Command reaffirmed its solidarity with journalists and residents of Anambra State during this period of mourning. “The Anambra State Police Command joins all journalists and well-meaning Ndi Anambra in mourning this irreplaceable gem. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” it said.
