Nigeria–U.S. Deepen Security Ties as AFRICOM Commander Visits Abuja

Nigeria and the United States has continued to strengthened their longstanding security partnership following a high-level visit by the Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Dagvin Anderson, to Abuja from February 8 to 9.
During the visit, Gen. Anderson according to a press release e-signed by the Director, Defence Information ,SAMAILA UBA Major General was received by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Defence Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, and other senior government and military officials.
The discussions according to the press release focused on shared security priorities and deepening bilateral cooperation in countering terrorist organizations that threaten Nigeria, the United States, the wider region, and global security.
Speaking during the engagements, Gen. Anderson reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Nigerian-led security solutions through intelligence-sharing, technical advisory support, and enhanced operational collaboration.
The leaders also explored opportunities for expanded military training, future force development, real-world operational training, and joint exercises, alongside other specialized capabilities that the United States can provide to strengthen Nigeria’s defence capacity.
As part of his visit, Gen. Anderson toured the joint U.S.–Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, a critical platform that enhances Nigeria’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities and enables real-time operational outcomes. He also interacted with senior Nigerian security officials to reinforce enduring cooperation aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s independent operational effectiveness.
The visit underscores the growing strategic partnership between Nigeria and the United States in advancing regional stability and combating emerging security threats.
