Governor of Benue State, Babagana Umara Zulum has strongly condemned the deadly explosion that struck a mosque in  Maidugori on Wednesday evening, describing the incident as “utterly condemnable, barbaric, and inhumane.”

The blast, suspected to be a suicide attack occurred during Maghrib prayers when Muslim worshippers had gathered at the mosque within the bustling Gamboru Market district. The incident caused panic in the area, with casualties reported and several others injured.

In a statement issued by his administration, Governor Zulum denounced the attack as a deliberate assault on innocent civilians and a desecration of a sacred place of worship.

According to the governor, the act was particularly disturbing as it occurred at a time when Muslim faithful were observing prayers and spiritual devotion, especially during a festive period that traditionally symbolizes peace, reflection, and community.

“Attacking a place of worship is a desecration of its sanctity at a time when Muslim faithful are performing acts of worship,” Zulum said, expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the explosion and prayed for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

The governor also appealed to residents of Maiduguri and other parts of the state to remain calm and not allow the incident to disrupt public peace. He urged the public to be more vigilant and security-conscious, particularly in places of worship, markets, and other crowded public spaces.

Zulum emphasized the importance of community cooperation with security agencies, noting that timely information sharing could help prevent future attacks and strengthen ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the state.

He assured residents that security agencies have already launched investigations into the incident and are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

The governor further revealed that security has been intensified across Maiduguri and other strategic locations in the state to forestall further threats and protect lives and property.

Benue State has been at the forefront of Nigeria’s fight against insurgency for more than a decade, with authorities continuing to implement security and humanitarian measures aimed at restoring lasting peace to the region.
