The Minister of Works, David Umahi has pushed back against critics of ongoing road projects, declaring that no amount of opposition or “gang-up” will derail the Federal Government’s infrastructure agenda; promised staff of a comprehensive training for all levels while prioritizing their welfare.

Umahi made the remarks on Wednesday at his office in Abuja during a surprise ceremony organized by staff athletes of the Ministry, who presented him with medals and a trophy won at the Federation of Public Service Games (FEPSGA) hosted in  Adamawa 2025.

Responding to critic particularly on social media, the Minister dismissed attacks as politically motivated, insisting they would not slow the pace of development.

“Attacks on social media because of politics, I do not care. You can see me smiling and moving forward. No amount of gang-up will stop the innovation in the Federal Ministry of Works,” he said.

He argued that many of the criticisms stem from a lack of understanding, noting that some of the roads attracting public complaints are not under federal jurisdiction. According to him, the Federal Government is even intervening in projects beyond its constitutional responsibility through constituency projects.

“People complain about roads that are not federal roads. Every Nigerian believes the President should construct all roads and he is doing even those that are not federal through constituency projects” Umahi stated.

The Minister also used the occasion to commend President Bola Ahmed , whom he dedicated the trophy to for what he described as unprecedented support for infrastructure development, praising his leadership and non-interference in the Ministry’s operations.

“The support from the President is unprecedented. He understands the importance of infrastructure to national development. He has never interfered in contract processes or asked us to favor anyone,” he said.

Reflecting on the state of infrastructure inherited in 2023, Umahi noted that public outcry over deteriorating roads and bridges intensified after the current administration assumed office, attributing it to heightened expectations from a leadership focused on infrastructure.

He also challenged critics to engage constructively, urging them to seek clarification on project costs rather than resorting to uninformed commentary.

“Hold me responsible and confront me, so we can dissect the unit cost of construction elements,” he added.

The event also served as a moment of celebration, as the Minister congratulated the Ministry’s athletes for their performance at the FEPSGA Games, describing their achievement as a reflection of teamwork and dedication.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Adeladan Rafiu-Olarinre, commended Umahi for fostering an enabling environment that contributed to the team’s success, noting that the victory was the result of deliberate investment in sports development, motivation, and strong leadership.

Adeladan enjoined staff to give their best to the service of the nation, assured them of  even a better working condition and welfarism.
