A commanding officer and six soldiers have been killed after troops of Operation HADIN KAI successfully repelled a terrorist attack on a military position in Monguno, Borno State, in what the military described as an “isolated infiltration attempt.”
The incident occurred late on April 12, 2026, when terrorists launched an attack on “Charlie 13” location under Sector 3 of the Joint Task Force (North East). Troops engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat while maintaining control of the base.
The disclosure was contained in a press release issued by the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, and signed by its Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, on April 13, 2026.
According to the statement, tragedy struck shortly after the successful defence operation when the Commanding Officer, who was moving to the frontline to assess the situation, encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), which fatally damaged his vehicle.
“Regrettably, the Commanding Officer, while courageously proceeding to the troops’ location to personally assess the situation, encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED)… leading to his death alongside six other gallant personnel,” the statement said.
The military described the late officer as a symbol of exemplary leadership, noting that his actions reflected courage, sacrifice, and a commitment to leading from the front even after the immediate threat had been neutralised.
“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of the battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment,” the statement added.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed deep sorrow over the loss, paying tribute to the fallen soldiers for their ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
“Their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served,” the statement noted.
The military reaffirmed its resolve to sustain ongoing operations against insurgents in the North East, while honouring the bravery and dedication of personnel on the frontlines.
