The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has successfully concluded the 2026 Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Democracy Day Volleyball Championship, with the Nigerian Navy emerging champions in both the male and female categories as the Armed Forces of Nigeria reinforced its commitment to operational fitness, teamwork and inter-service cooperation.
The championship, held at the Aguiyi Ironsi Indoor Sports Complex in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations, brought together personnel from the various services in a spirited display of athletic excellence, discipline and camaraderie.
Details of the event were contained in a press release issued by the Defence Headquarters and signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director Defence Information, on June 12, 2026.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, emphasized the importance of physical fitness and mental resilience in military service, describing the championship as both timely and strategic in preparing personnel to meet the demands of national security responsibilities.
Represented by the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations, Rear Admiral Sabiru Lawal, the CDS commended participants, organizers and officials for the successful conduct of the tournament and praised the high level of professionalism displayed throughout the competition.
“The true value of this championship lies beyond medals and trophies. Its greatest achievements are the experiences shared, friendships forged and the spirit of unity strengthened among our personnel,” General Oluyede stated.
He noted that volleyball promotes concentration, endurance, resilience and teamwork—qualities that are essential to effective military operations and mission success.
The CDS congratulated the winning teams while encouraging other participants to view the competition as an opportunity for learning, growth and continuous improvement.
Earlier, while declaring the tournament open, the Chief of Defence Administration, Rear Admiral Gideon Kachim, described the championship as a celebration of unity, professionalism and the strong bond that exists among members of the Armed Forces.
According to him, the values required to excel in volleyball closely mirror those expected of military personnel in the discharge of their constitutional duties.
“Sports remain critical to building resilience, maintaining operational fitness and discovering talents capable of representing both the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the country at national and international levels,” Kachim said.
At the end of the tournament, the Nigerian Navy emerged victorious in both the men’s and women’s categories, defeating rival service teams to claim the championship trophies and accompanying cash prizes.
The Navy also completed a clean sweep by producing the Most Valuable Players (MVPs) in both categories, underscoring its dominance throughout the competition.
Military authorities noted that sports continue to serve as an important platform for deepening jointness, strengthening esprit de corps and fostering healthy relationships among personnel from different services.
According to the Defence Headquarters, the enthusiastic participation, intense competition and strong display of teamwork witnessed during the championship demonstrated that the objectives of the event were successfully achieved.
The championship formed part of broader Democracy Day activities aimed at promoting unity, physical readiness and professional excellence within the Armed Forces of Nigeria while reinforcing the spirit of cooperation required for effective joint military operations.
