Minister Doro deepens sustainable pathways for poverty reduction, resilience and economic empowerment

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, has declared that he adopted a reform-driven approach immediately after assuming office to ensure government interventions make a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens.
Doro said the reforms are designed to transform humanitarian response beyond emergency relief by creating sustainable pathways for poverty reduction, resilience and economic empowerment.
The Minister spoke while receiving the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), Pharmacist Ibrahim Baba Shehu Ahmed, FPSN, and members of his delegation during a courtesy visit to the Ministry in Abuja.
The position was contained in a press statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction and signed by Janet McDickson Noah, Director of Information and Public Relations.
According to the Minister, the Ministry’s flagship initiative, the One Humanitarian, One Poverty Reduction System (OHOPRS), is providing a unified framework that aligns humanitarian response, social protection and poverty reduction programmes under a single national coordination mechanism.
“I took a reformist method as soon as I was appointed Minister to enable a positive difference that can touch the lives of more vulnerable people,” Doro said.
He explained that the OHOPRS initiative is aimed at eliminating duplication, fragmentation and isolated interventions across humanitarian and social protection programmes, while promoting long-term self-reliance for beneficiaries.
“OHOPRS seeks to eliminate fragmentation, duplication and isolated interventions across humanitarian and social protection programmes, not only for immediate relief but as pathways to resilience, economic empowerment and long-term self-sufficiency,” the Minister stated.
Doro commended the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria for their contributions to the nation’s healthcare system, particularly in regulating pharmaceutical practice and curbing the activities of quacks.
He urged the Council to sustain its efforts in protecting public health and expressed the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with the organisation in areas of mutual interest.
Earlier, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, Pharmacist Ibrahim Baba Shehu Ahmed, congratulated Doro on his appointment, describing him as a seasoned professional whose global experience would positively transform the humanitarian sector.
Ahmed said the Council’s visit was intended to encourage the Minister and express its support for the reforms being implemented by the Ministry.
“We are behind you to support you. Dr. Doro is a global professional who will bring his wealth of experience to service and transform the sector, as he has already started doing,” Ahmed said.
The PCN Registrar explained that the Council is the statutory body responsible for regulating pharmacy practice in Nigeria in line with international best practices, noting that it operates offices in all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, with its headquarters in Abuja and a special operational zone in Lagos.
He added that the Council works closely with other organisations to promote a healthier society and expressed its willingness to partner with the Ministry wherever necessary to achieve shared national development objectives.
