TCN Sparks Interest in Engineering as Kano Students Explore National Grid Operations

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing the next generation of engineers and technical professionals by exposing secondary school students to practical electricity transmission operations through an educational excursion to its Kumbotso 330/132kV Transmission Substation in Kano State.
Science students of Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Dukawuya, Kano, visited the facility on August 4, 2026, where they received hands-on lessons on the country’s power transmission system, bridging classroom knowledge with real-life engineering practice.
The development was disclosed in a press statement issued by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and signed by the Management of TCN.
During the excursion, TCN engineers conducted the students around the substation, explaining the electricity transmission process, the functions of critical transmission equipment, operations within the control room, and the stringent safety measures observed in managing the national grid.
The interactive session also enabled the students to engage directly with engineers, ask questions and gain first-hand knowledge of how Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure operates.
According to the company, the visit was designed to deepen students’ understanding of the nation’s power transmission network while inspiring greater interest in careers in science, engineering and technology.
“The excursion deepened the students’ understanding of Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure and stimulated interest in careers in science, engineering and technology. It further underscored the value of industry-academia collaboration in developing the next generation of technical professionals,” the statement said.
TCN noted that the initiative reflects its broader commitment to promoting technical knowledge, engineering excellence and capacity development across the country.
The company added that by providing learning opportunities that expose young Nigerians to real-world power transmission operations, it is helping to build the skilled workforce required to sustain and advance Nigeria’s electricity sector.
