LAYA WINDSTORM: Sen. Khabeeb Calls For Urgent Provision of Palliative

The senator representing Jigawa Southwest senatorial district, Sen. Mustapha Khabeeb in a motion titled ” motion on the urgent need to provide palliative to Laya town, Gwaram local government of Jigawa state.” has called on the federal government to  provide  palliative to the affected community of the devastative windstorm.

Concerned that the people of Laya town are less privileged persons displaced by the windstorm and living in destitution, suffering and fear of future disasters and worried that government agencies failed to give disaster warnings and preparedness technics to prevent and control disasters to local communities thereby causing constant fear and lack of knowledge on preparedness by communities across the country in his motion prays that the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) be directed to send relief materials especially building materials to enable the people of Laya Town to rebuild their homes and alleviate their pain in view of the impending raining season as well mandate the Senate Committees on Environment and Compliance to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks.

The motion which received the support  of the senate said the people of Laya community of Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State experienced a devastating windstorm on Thursday May 16, 2024.

The windstorm accompanied by a heavy rainfall according to the motion has caused widespread destruction of lives, injuries houses, farmlands, and schools in the community with essential infrastructure been destroyed.

“Further Notes that the windstorm accompanied by a heavy rainfall has caused widespread destruction of lives, injuries, houses, farmlands, and schools in the community;

Aware that the windstorm has further resulted in the displacement of people and families from their ancestral homes, animals, farmlands,as well as destroying essential infrastructure for their economic prosperity”

Addressing journalist in his office, Sen. Mustapha khabeeb lament the suffering of the people of Laya community, says the entire town was razed down by the windstorm and rain leaving five (5) persons dead with no building standing in the town.

The Senator who appeals to the federal government to help the people of the community with succour to enable rebuild their destroyed homes.

“The people  are leaving to Bauchi state in search of a roof over their head because even the primary schools that would temporarily provides shelter at a time as this is also destroyed by the windstorm”
