BENUE APPEAL VERDICT: the will of God, gains for the people

In a significant development for Benue State’s democratic landscape, the Appeal Court in Abuja has upheld the decisions of the Benue State Local Government Election Petition Tribunal, affirming the elections of several local government chairpersons. This ruling has been met with widespread jubilation across the state, particularly at the grassroots level, as it reinforces the legitimacy of the elected officials and paves the way for focused developmental initiatives across the local government council areas.

 

The local government elections held on October 5, 2024, in Benue State were followed by numerous petitions challenging the outcomes in various councils. The Election Petition Tribunal, initially set to sit in Makurdi, was relocated to Abuja due to alleged security concerns. This move sparked debates and protests, with various stakeholders expressing divergent views on the appropriateness of the relocation. However, today’s judgement by the appeal court, which the highest court on this matter; and end comes to the matter and the parties involved arrived at their final bus stop.

The Appeal Court today June 3, 2025 delivered its judgment, dismissing multiple appeals against the tribunal’s earlier decisions. The court found that the elections were conducted in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act, thereby validating the victories of the contested chairpersons. Notably, the Executive Chairman of Ado Local Government Area, Hon. Engr. Sunny Oche, described his victory as symbolic and reflective of divine will, emphasizing his lack of resentment toward those who challenged his mandate but committed to cascading the development initiatives of His Excellency,  Gov. Hyacinth Alia in bringing government closer to the people at the grassroot.

This judicial affirmation serves as a testament to the robustness of democratic institutions in the State. By upholding the will of the electorate, the judiciary has reinforced public confidence in the electoral process and the rule of law. With legal uncertainties resolved, the affirmed chairpersons can now focus on governance and the implementation of developmental projects, fostering socio-economic growth at the local government level.
