NAOWA Marks International Women’s Day with Health, Fitness, Empowerment Drive in Benin

The 4 Brigade Chapter of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) has commemorated the 2026 International Women’s Day with a vibrant programme focused on health awareness, physical fitness, and women’s empowerment within military communities in Edo State.
The event, held on March 17, 2026, at the NAOWA Skills Acquisition Centre in Ekehuan Military Cantonment, Benin City, drew a large turnout of barrack women, underscoring a shared commitment to personal wellbeing and community development.
In her opening remarks, the Zonal Coordinator of NAOWA 4 Brigade Chapter, Mrs. Mariam Aina Balogun according to a press release e-signed by Assistant Director Army Public Relations 4 Brigade Nigerian Army Benin City, KENNEDY ANYANWU Captain said the celebration aligned with this year’s theme, “Give to Gain: For All Women and Girls – Rights, Equality and Empowerment.” She emphasized the central role of women in societal progress and stability.
“Women remain pivotal to societal growth and stability. I urge all women to continue fostering unity, resilience, and self-development in their daily lives,” she stated.
Delivering his goodwill message, the Commander of 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ahmed Balogun, commended NAOWA members for their unwavering support to their families and the military institution.
He described them as “resilient and indispensable pillars of the military community,” adding that “women are the backbone of the home front and their empowerment must remain a priority.”
Also speaking, the Special Guest of Honour, Mrs. Eyitoyosi Shonibare, reaffirmed NAOWA’s commitment to improving the welfare of military families and advancing community development initiatives.
She stressed the importance of self-care, urging participants to prioritize both physical and mental health. “Women must take deliberate steps to care for themselves while striving for personal and collective development,” she said.
The event featured a series of activities including a road walk, group fitness routines, and an energetic Zumba session aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles. Participants were also entertained with drama presentations by NAOWA students and members of the Nigerian Army Soldiers’ Wives Association (NASWA), alongside colourful cultural dance displays.
A major highlight was the medical awareness session, where participants received practical training on first aid administration, fire prevention, and emergency response strategies.
The celebration further highlighted the critical role of women in strengthening families, fostering community cohesion, and contributing to national development.
